GUWAHATI: Larger sections of business establishment in the city has remained shut while fuel stations have gone dry in view of “Bharat Vyapar Bandh” called by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Friday to oppose the Walmart-Flipkart deal besides foreign direct investment in retail trade.
Commuters in the busy city which is termed the gateway to the Northeast have faced harrowing time with public transport system being thrown out of gear with fuel stations going dry because of the ‘trade bandh’.
The apex traders’ body had in its annual general meeting in August this year taken the decision to call the country-wide bandh alleging that the deal would wipe out competition as Walmart’s business module entails predatory pricing, deep discounting and loss funding.
An American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets and department stores, Walmart had recently announced its acquisition of 77 per cent stake in Flipkart, an Indian e-commerce firm.
The trade bandh, however, has failed to have much impact in other parts of the state as well as rest of the region. There has not been any impact of the trade bandh at Agartala and rest of Tripura, according to a source in the business community there.
