SHILLONG: District Council Affairs Minister James Sangma said on Wednesday the number of employees in the GHADC was not on a par with the revenue earned by the autonomous body and “a lot of streamlining has to be done”.
Talking to media persons after holding a meeting with GHADC CEMs and EMs, Sangma said the meeting also discussed the robust recruitment rules and streamlining of finances to the autonomous district councils.
Over 2,000 employees of the GHADC have not got salary for the last 16 months and the council requires Rs 80 crore to clear the dues.
Terming it as unfortunate, Sangma said that the problem of pending salary did not emerge overnight but existed for many years. Expressing concern over the fact that employees are not being paid, he added that the government is thinking of ways to clear the dues but it is not an easy job.
Stevie Marak, Congress MDC representing Boldangre, had recently accused the MDCs and Sangma of not solving the issue of pending salary of the GHADC employees and also demanded the minister’s resignation.
