SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union has objected to municipal election saying it will be against the traditional practice.
In a statement issued here on Friday, KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar said the existing customary practice should not be replaced by a foreign practice.
“Whatever happens we will still say no to municipal elections,” he said and added that civic polls would threaten customary practice.
A contempt petition was filed in the High Court of Meghalaya on October 1 against the government for not holding municipal election in Shillong.
The court has directed the advocate general to file a response within three weeks.
However, KSU urged traditional institutions, political parties and MLAs to oppose municipal elections.
Marngar said the state government should not interfere in traditional institutions and instead empower them. “The state government should take the responsibility if disruption occurs,” he added.
