NGO takes up cleanliness initiative in 12 villages

SHILLONG: AROH foundation celebrated Rashtriya Swachchta Divas from Tuesday till Thursday at 12 villages of Laitkroh Block by taking up various initiatives.
The foundation organised various events on the theme Swachchhta Hi Sewa through CSR initiative of HDFC Bank Ltd at Mawjrong, Mawkdok, Dympep, Umtynngar, 12Mer, Dympep, Umdiengpoh, Mawbeh, Lumkyntung, Mawkalang, Steplakrai and Laitumiong which falls under Laitkroh.
The initiative aims to create awareness to achieve total sanitation and prevention from infectious diseases due to lack of cleanliness.
On the occasion, Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliemngap visited the bio toilet at Umdiengpoh village and also spread awareness on health and sanitation.
H.S Kharpran, Divisional Head of Soil and Water Conservation department addressed the students of St Peter L.P School Mawjrong on the importance of cleanliness.  He said cleanliness and hygiene should be a compulsory habit in all villages.
Activities also included awareness march with sloganeering by school staff, students and beneficiaries of 12 villages and plantation of trees on community land.
Meetings were also held with school managing committees and association of parents and teachers.
Cleaning of toilets, wash basins, mid-day meal kitchen, classrooms, campus and surrounding areas and distribution of dustbins to 12 schools, planting of trees in school premises and setting up kitchen garden at school levels were also part of the initiative.
Group painting competition with the theme ‘swachchhta’ for primary & middle school students and an exhibition were organized  outside the classrooms of every school besides slogan writing competition for middle level school students The children were also taught proper method of hand washing before and after eating and after going to toilet.
