SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance partners will start discussions on a common candidate for the 2019 Lok Sabha election, as mooted by the UDP, after Chief Minister Conrad Sangma returns from his tour, NPP state president WR Kharlukhi has said.
When asked about UDP proposing its candidate for the Shillong parliamentary seat, Kharlukhi said the ally has “only proposed the idea and even other parties can propose names and later the alliance will come together for a consensus decision”.
Though the NPP state head said the party cannot stop any partner from fielding its candidate as MDA is a post-poll alliance, he hoped that a consensus would be reached.
BJP leader AL Hek had recently said the party should field its candidate for the Lok Sabha polls but left the decision on the central leadership.
Meanwhile, he also said it would be difficult for the Congress to win seats in the entire country, including Meghalaya. Shillong constituency has gone to the Congress for the last two terms with Vincent Pala as the MP and Tura constituency has been retained by NPP.
