Metbah Lyngdoh attends Conclave of Himalayan states
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Tourism Minister Metbah Lyngdoh led a Meghalaya delegation during the Chief Minister’s Conclave of Himalayan States held in Shimla on Friday.The theme of the conclave was centered on the ‘Well being of the next generation of Himalayan people’. Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan, Union Minister of State, Home Kiran Rijju, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Jairam Thakur, Chief Minister of Uttrakhand, Parliamentarians of the Himalayan States and others were present on the occasion.It was after nine years that Himachal Pradesh organised this conclave of Himalayan States and discussions were held under various themes of agriculture, tourism and hydro-power. MLAs Nujorki Sungoh and Rakkam A Sangma along with officials from Agriculture, Tourism and MGPCL accompanied Lyngdoh. Addressing the gathering, Lyngdoh emphasized on the need to have a separate policy by the Government of India for all the Himalayan states and stated that the time has come for all the states to work efficiently towards managing climate change by means of encouraging organic farming, forest conservation and protection of ecology. According to Lyngdoh the conclave would go a long way and is in need of a joint strategy for the development of three key sectors — agriculture, sustainable tourism and power generation. Lyngdoh further said that all Himalayan states should collectively request the Centre to support them with their developmental needs.
‘Garoland’ activists seek government support
SHILLONG: The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) has urged the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government to look into their demand for a separate state because it “is the main agenda” of the Garos. The demand for a separate Garoland has been a long-pending issue. The GSMC also stated that a separate state would enable Garos to witness development and employment.
Kathakali exponent performs at SNGCC
SHILLONG: Renowned Kathakali exponent Kottakkal Nandakumaran Nair mesmerized a modest gathering with his performance on ‘Putana Moksham’ (killing of the demoness Putana by baby Krishna and the liberation of her spirit from all sins) at the newly laid Oneness Center of city-based socio cultural organisation Sree Narayana Guru Cultural Centre here on Monday. On the occasion, Nair also unveiled the Oneness Center – which will promote and showcase multicultural activities besides academic, literary and others. Monday’s rendition – presented by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Shillong in association with SNGCC – was second in line after his ‘Madura Dahanam’ (Revenge of the Golden Anklet) on Sunday evening at the old guesthouse auditorium of NEHU. Nair – who was also felicitated on the occasion with a memento – is an empanelled artist accredited with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India and his visit to Shillong was initiated by SNGCC.
District level children’s science congress held in Ampati
AMPATI: The District-level Children’s Science Congress organised by South West Garo Hills District Planning Office in collaboration with the Education Department under the aegis of the State Council of Science, Technology & Environment (SCSTE), Shillong was held at Ampati Multi-Facility Centre on Monday. Altogether 11 schools participated in the event that centered on the theme ‘Science, Technology & Innovation for Clean, Green and Healthy Nation’ to promote ways of solving everyday problems with the application of scientific knowledge. During the inaugural programme, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ampati DD Shira addressed the participants with words of encouragement and motivation and said that the projects and exhibits displayed by the students would go a long way in helping to address daily issues and challenges.

Man, wife assaulted EKH
SHILLONG: Nur Alom Haque (30) was assaulted along with his wife by miscreants at his residence for unknown reason as stated by his wife at Lad Nongkrem around 9:37 pm. He sustained injuries and was taken to Civil Hospital Shillong by a Smit-based 108 ambulance.
