All fingers chopped off an Adivasi man’s hand in Bengal
Kolkata: A group of people allegedly chopped off the fingers from an Adivasi man’s hand in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, purportedly due to some superstition, police said on Wednesday. According to police, the 60-year-old Adivasi man was hospitalised after his fingers were chopped off. “We are yet to receive any written complaint. But we are looking into the matter,” police said, adding that efforts were on to trace the culprits. (IANS)

164 swine flu deaths in Raj, highest in country
Jaipur: Rajasthan recorded 164 deaths due to swine flu till September this year, the highest in the country, according to official data. According to National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), a total of 1,652 cases of swine flu surfaced in Rajasthan till September 30. A total of 4,484 positive swine flu cases were recorded in the country and 353 deaths occurred during the period, as per the data. After Rajasthan, 1,167 positive swine flu cases were recorded in Maharashtra, of which 101 people succumbed to the deadly virus. Gujarat recorded 786 cases and 30 deaths were recorded till September 30 this year. As per the latest data of the Rajasthan Health and Family Welfare Department, a total of 1,818 positive cases of swine flu were detected in the state till October 9 this year and 182 deaths have occurred so far. In Jaipur, 822 people tested positive for the virus and 36 deaths were recorded. It was followed by 291 cases and 23 deaths in Kota, 105 cases and 18 deaths in Jodhpur district and 62 cases and 15 deaths in Baran district, the department said. (PTI)

Bodies of five siblings found in well, parents on run
Barwani (MP): Bodies of five minor siblings were found floating in a well Wednesday in Chikhli village in Madhya Pradesh’s Barwani district, the police said. Parents of the deceased, all boys aged between three to seven years, are absconding, an officer said. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Omkar Singh Kalesh said the circumstances under which these children have died are being investigated. Villagers have told police that there was some dispute in the family of Bharat Singh (40) who has two wives. “Bodies of the five boys were spotted by villagers in a well in Chikhli village (about 80 kms from the district headquarters) under Sendhwa rural police station,” he said. A police team fished out the bodies from the water with the help of villagers and sent them for postmortem, said Kalesh. He said four of the children were born to Singh’s first wife Sundari Bai (36) while one child from his second wife Anita Bai (30). “Bharat Singh and his wives are absconding,” the officer said, adding that details will be known after the arrest of the trio. Further investigation is underway. (PTI)

3 more arrested for stabbing man after tempo brushes past pet dog
New Delhi: Three more people were arrested for allegedly stabbing a tempo driver to death after the victim’s vehicle brushed past a pet dog in Dwarka’s Mohan Garden area, a police officer said on Wednesday. On Sunday, 19-year-old Karan Arora was arrested in connection with the case and this week, three more people were nabbed. The three other accused persons were identified as Ankit (24) and Paras (20) and their tenant Dev Chopra (28), the officer said. The dog belonged to Ankit and Paras. The police also seized the knife which was used in the crime. (PTI)

Cong workers protest against exodus of migrant workers
Muzaffarnagar (UP): Scores of Congress activists staged demonstrations against the exodus of Hindi-speaking migrants from Gujarat after attacks on them in several parts of the state. The protest was led by district Congress party president Tarik Qureshi. They claimed the Gujarat government was unable to protect north Indians. The party men also held demonstration in Shamli district. (PTI)

Man held for attempting to rape 15-yr-old
Muzaffarnagar (UP): A man allegedly attempted to rape a 15-year-old girl while she was alone at her home, police said Wednesday. The accused was arrested after the girl’s family members filed a complaint against him, Station House Officer Shokender Pal said. The accused tried to rape the girl when she was alone at her home. He escaped when she cried, the SHO said. (PTI)

496 bottles of smuggled liquor seized in Maharajganj
Maharajganj (UP): Sashastra Seema Bal on Wednesday seized 496 bottles of smuggled liquor near a village along the Indo-Nepal border, officials said. SSB’s 22nd battalion, Bhagwanpur outpost sub inspector Barat Hazarika said a team of the armed force intercepted two cycles near pillar number 516/22 close to Ragunathpur village and seized the liquor. He said the liquor was worth Rs 1.73 lakh, and it was smuggled into the country from Nepal by two men. While one of them managed to flee, the other was arrested, police said. A probe is on in the matter. (PTI)

Man cheated of Rs 55 lakh on promise of medical seat
Mumbai: A 48-year-old man lost Rs 55 lakh to four fraudsters who allegedly tricked him to pay by promising a medical seat to his daughter in a city college, the police said on Tuesday. According to complainant Dipak Birwatkar, four persons had befriended him and promised to help him secure admission for his daughter who failed to get a medical seat since 2015, an official said. They had taken the money from Birwatkar, a resident of Sewree in Central Mumbai, in the past. Birwatkar approached RA Kidwai Marg police station, after the four stopped answering his phone calls. An FIR was registered under various sections of the IPC including cheating and further investigation is underway. (PTI)
Four killed as fire breaks out in hosiery factory in Ludhiana
Ludhiana: Four persons were killed in a fire that broke out in a hosiery factory at Kalyan Nagar on Wednesday morning, police said. The deceased were labourers who were working in the factory at the time of incident, police said. The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, police inspector Surinder Chopra. (PTI)
