NONGSTOIN: The land owners of Lai Lyngdoh area in West Khasi Hills demanded the State Government to accelerate the compensation process of the Nongstoin-Wahkaji road for which the agreement was signed in 2015.
Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, Phrangklin Kharbani, general secretary of the Land Owners’ Association said that the Synjuk has also asked the District Council to immediately issue an NOC for Nonglwai-Nongkynjang to Mawpon road as the stretch is still a private property.
The association has also submitted an NOC from the affected villages of Lai lyngdoh to the CEM of KHADC to look into the matter.
Kharbani said that the land owners are getting impatient and are in doubt if the government still wants the portion.
According to him, the Government had issued a notification in 2015 regarding the land, which stated that the portion should not be rented or sold to anyone as it was under the Government with a bargain to compensate for the stretch.
Lai Lyngdoh area includes three villages namely Nongkynjang, Nonglwai, Mawpon and the land owners are facing difficulties due to the non-payment of the compensation.
Furthermore, the condition of the road is degrading as days go by.
Kharbani said “Even the 108 Ambulance is refusing to carry patients because of the bad road condition and it has created difficulties for the villagers”, Kharbani said.
The road project will benefit 70 other villages and if the State Government and KHADC speed up the project, it will be a blessing to thousands of residents.”
He further informed that the people on the other hand are very happy with the decision of the State Government to go ahead with the two-lane Nongstoin –Wahkaji-Ranikor road project.
“The people of the area are not supporting uranium mining but they need a better road as the government has promised that the road is not connected to uranium Issue”, Kharbani said.
