Assam Rifles Annual IGs’ conference concludes in city
SHILLONG: The two day annual Assam Rifles Inspector Generals’ Conference ended with an important policy decisions which will benefit the Force in particular and the North East in general. The conference focused on exchange of ideas and thoughts that would enhance the operational efficiency of the Assam Rifles. It also emphasised on cementing the bonding and cultural connect with the people of Northeast. The highlight of the event was the first ever culture and cuisine competition that brought to forefront, the richness of cultural diversity of different parts of North East as well as numerous other states of India. An exhibition of the local handicrafts and artefacts made by the men and the families of Assam Rifles showcasing the talent of the North East people was hugely appreciated.

Workshop on palliative care held at NEIGRIHMS
SHILLONG: A workshop on palliative care and “Communication skills – Bridging the gap” was held at NEIGRIHMS from October 11 to 12. The workshop was organised by the department of Anaesthesiology & Critical care in collaboration with CNE (Cell) NEIGRIHMS. Gilly Burn, a palliative care nurse-pioneer from UK was present as the guest of honour. Burn was one of the prime instigators in setting up the Indian Association of Palliative Care, and is an expert on palliative care society in India. Main Topics included the concept of palliative care and communication, nursing assessment, pain control in palliative care, importance of end of life care, roles of nurses and communication skills. There was also a screening of a movie inspired by a true story, centred on a 27-year-old man who learns of his cancer diagnosis and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease. Participants, who attended the workshop included Doctors, medical social workers and nurses from various hospitals. The Director NEIGRIHMS DM Thappa lauded the role of nursing in palliative care, particularly in terminally ill patients and spoke on the problems people face as patients who are diagnosed with cancer. Dr Bhattacharya, HOD Anaesthesiology and I/C palliative care unit in NEIGRIHMS said : “Let us come together take the burden of patients suffering, let us share the joys and sorrows with the people suffering with cancer.” A panel discussion on the diversity of palliative care was held on the second day including the release of the first annual CNE Bulletin. A bike rally was also organised on Saturday to create awareness among the people of the North East regarding palliative care including a musical concert at NEIGRIHMS auditorium in an effort to raise funds for cancer patients.

Global Hand Washing day observed in Ri Bhoi
SHILLONG: Global Hand Washing Day was observed by the Shillong Diocese of Believers, Eastern Church during a programme held at Government Primary School, Umsaw Khwan in Ri-Bhoi on Monday. The programme which was centered on the theme ‘Clean Hands – A recipe for health’ was inaugurated by Fr Th.Meghachandra Singh, principal of Believers Eastern Church Seminary. A short video on basic principle of hand washing was also screened to school students on the occasion along with free distribution of soaps. Global Hand Washing Day was also observed at 13 Bridge of Hope project centers – a child care project of Shillong Diocese of Believers Eastern Church – across the state.

Teachers’ association demands regular salary from govt
SHILLONG: The Mawkhar-Jaiaw zone of the Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers Association has decided that its central body should take up the issue regarding regular salary for all deficit teachers with the State Government. A statement issued by the association said that the government should pay regular salaries to all deficit teachers as they have already fulfilled the criteria such as official appointment, approval and confirmation through government order. They also said that as Meghalaya is a Christian state, the government should release the 1st installment of arrears (25pc) of the revised pay for deficit teachers before Christmas. The association also said that the Government should extend the 5th pay commission’s recommendation in letter and spirit to the teachers.

Star Cement donates ambulance
SHILLONG: An ambulance was donated to the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) by Star Cement Ltd through its CSR scheme on Monday. The handing over of the ambulance was held in presence Star Cement Ltd DGM MK Rai and CSR manager Sukanya Goswami. HNYF leader Donbok Dkhar said that the services of the ambulance will be extended to the people from different parts of the region. He informed that the ambulance will be stationed in Jaintia Hills and those who require its services can contact 035642536042, 8413069322, 9089613117 and 7628861816.

MUPSTA holds general meeting
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teachers Association (MUPSTA) Mairang sub-divisional unit held its general meeting at the office of the Mairang Seng Kynthei Mission, Mairang on Saturday. The meeting was presided over by the area convener Donboklang Wahlang as the chairman and was attended by state officials comprising organising cum publicity secretary EG War, president K Shadap and West Khasi Hills district president B Khardewdaw. State organising cum publicity secretary EG War spoke about how the organizational movements and agitation programmes conducted by the MUPSTA for the last 25 years have been successful in which the government had increased teachers’ salaries five times to date. The speaker also said that the teachers should understand that the MUPSTA always stands for the benefit of the teachers as a whole. President K Shadap said that the association is confident that the government would implement the demands which had been submitted to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma back in July regarding the upgradation of all Upper Primary Schools to deficit system.

Nongpoh MLA inaugurates community hall in Ri Bhoi
Nongpoh: A parent’s meeting was held at Umta Secondary School in Ri Bhoi on Monday. Local legislator Mayralborn Syiem who was present during the programme said that education is one of the very important tools to survive in today’s world in which there is a lot of tough competition. “There is no urban and no rural, everyone nowadays strives for knowledge and it is very important that education should be the top priority of every parent towards their children” Syiem said adding that without education, there would be no future for younger generations. Syiem also urged the people in attendance to preserve the environment and to fight against drugs and other illicit substances which have started to spread even in rural villages especially among the youth and even school children. Earlier, Syiem inaugurated the community hall of Umta Thymmai and the basketball court of Umta Secondary School, Umta Rim which were constructed under the SRWP scheme. The inauguration was also attended by District School Education Officer VS Nongbet, Rev D Ingti, Plielad Tiewsoh, Umta SS Principal, Pearly Pamshong, headmen and other prominent leaders of the constituency.
