SHILLONG: The by-poll to the Selsella Assembly seat, which fell vacant following the death of sitting legislator Clement Marak, is likely to be held sometime early next year.
The state election department has already informed the Election Commission of India about the vacancy following the notification of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in this regard.
An election official said on Wednesday that since there will be examinations for the students in November followed by Christmas in December the by-election is unlikely to be held this year.
Source said if there is early Lok Sabha polls next year, the by-election may be held simultaneously.
Political parties in the state have not decided on their respective candidates as they consider it as too early after Marak passed away on October 8.
With 20 seats, NPP is currently the single largest party in the House of 59.
Both Congress and NPP are expected to field candidates when the by-poll is announced.
