SHILLONG: As expectations for government jobs run high because of growing unemployment, MLA from Mawphlang S K Sunn urged the youth to explore the potential of entrepreneurship in the state.

He was speaking at the Youth Clubs Development programme organized by Ri-War Mihngi Development Council, Pynursla in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on Saturday.

Sunn encouraged the youth present at the interactive session to tap the local resources and build up their entrepreneurial base and said, “You will not need MLAs/MDCs to recommend names for you to get employment in government sectors.”

He highlighted  some of the businesses that the youth can take up such as food processing centers, however, he emphasized on having a better market facilities for selling the processed foods.

He also pointed to the potential in tapping the bamboo resources such as bamboo flooring which is a new concept in Meghalaya and encouraged the youth to try their hands in bamboo flooring which is in high demand in the West.

Observing that jackfruit grows aplenty, Sunn said the fruit can be used for various purposes and informed that the people in the Western countries used the seed of the fruit for treating wrinkles.

“The seed of the fruit is dipped in milk. After the seed absorbed the milk, it is grounded and applied on the face,” he said.

Trade with neighboring country of Bangladesh, Sunn said, would boost the business of the local people as well.

Referring to the rising cases of cattle smuggling, he urged the locals not to indulge in illegal activities but to instead exploit the potential of the meat industry in the state.
