D D Lapang not to be party candidate for LS polls: NPP

SHILLONG: The National People’s Party (NPP) has denied the speculation that former Congress leader, D D Lapang would be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as a party candidate.

Talking to media persons in Shillong on Tuesday after two BJP leaders and a former MDC joined the party, NPP State president, WR Kharlukhi reiterated that the party had not even invited application from the probable candidates for the Lok Sabha polls.

He said that the party had given DD Lapang the post of Chief Advisor out of respect for the veteran leader.

Earlier, he also downplayed the reported threat from the UDP to the MDA coalition saying that there is no consensus among the MDA allies for a common candidate in the Lok Sabha polls.

Kharlukhi maintained that the alliance was yet to discuss the issue of common candidates and issue would be discussed in the MDA coordination committee meeting.

Denying any threat to the alliance, he said that threats to the alliance appeared only in media

Earlier top leaders of the BJP, East Jaintia Hills region R Dkhar besides another leader and a former MDC S Shadap officially joined the NPP.

The former BJP leaders said that they resigned from the BJP as they want to be with the NPP.

Kharlukhi also said that the party was preparing well for the MDC elections in Jaintia Hills and the party was optimistic of a good performance

He said that the NPP in the last Assembly election won three out of seven seats in Jaintia Hills  and the party got the highest votes which were around  70000 in the region.

He also said that party had setup  election committee for the MDC elections in both KHADC and JHADC but finalization of candidates would take some time.
