SHILLONG: The implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) will ensure peace in the state and generate self-employment opportunities, said HS Shylla on Monday.
The KHADC chief executive member told reporters that ILP “will address the genuine fear (of the indigenous community) of being outnumbered” and is not a communal move.
Refuting any adverse impact on tourism, Shylla said, “There will be an increase in footfall as it will be safe for them (the tourists). The locals will instead welcome them… Vehicles ferrying tourists will be asked to stop on reaching Shillong and the local taxis will take the tourists.”
He said the KHADC will have to recruit personnel to man check-gates.
The KHADC has decided to move a resolution during its special session urging the governor to notify ILP, which is derived from the Bengal Eastern Frontier (Regulation), 1873, in scheduled areas.
ILP will generate revenue and give local youths employment, Shylla pointed out. He said people can also download forms online.
He added that the state government directed the KHADC to take necessary action after it forwarded a letter to it on the HYC’s demand for ILP.
