SHILLONG: The by-election to Selsella constituency which is now lying vacant following the death of Clement Marak has to be held before March next year.
Talking to media persons here on Wednesday, Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor said that the Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly had already notified the vacancy and the state Election department had already forwarded the letter to the Election Commission.
Stating that it is difficult to say as to when the by-elections will be held and added that the vacancy had to be filled within six months.
Reacting to a query about electoral rolls, he said that summary revision was going on currently and the electoral roll would be published in early part of January next year.
When asked about the concerns of the NGOs in Meghalaya with regard to entry of D voters in the electoral roll, he said that the Election Commission had a de-duplication software to detect dual entries even as he added that officers were also doing checking to validate the genuineness of the at the time of enrollments.
