SHILLONG: Former Meghalaya DGP R Awasthi on Tuesday denied allegations of illegally withdrawing funds and said all bills were cleared following legal procedure.
The state police headquarters reportedly prevented Awasthi’s move to withdraw over Rs 90 lakh a day before his retirement on September 29.
“The question is who is sensing trouble about the money,” Awasthi said and added that the officer concerned had earlier signed cheques worth crores of rupees and there was no problem then.
Terming the allegations as false, he said “all the bills were cleared as per the legal orders and authorisation”.
Stating that he was appointed as the DGP due to the Supreme Court’s order, Awasthi said some officers in the police headquarters are sharing wrong information and “such wrong allegations have been framed by vested interests”.
As per reports, the money was withdrawn after several cheques of Rs 20 lakh each were signed by one AIG who was appointed by Awasthi a few days before his retirement.
