SHIILONG/TURA: To press the demand for completion of the Ronggap Bridge at Baiza further, combined organisations from Williamnagar in East Garo Hills have announced office picketing of all government departments in the district on October 26 as part of its 3rd phase of agitations.
The decision for the agitation comes after a meeting was held on Monday between organisations from the region including the GSU (CEC), FAF, AIGU, ICFS and Sumo and pick-up associations which have been spearheading the movement.
“We will not stop until our genuine demands are fulfilled. We are firm in our stand and will continue our protest in different forms until we see work resuming on the bridge,” General Secretary of GSU, Rocky Filler M Sangma said.
The construction of the Ronggap Bridge at Baiza started several decades ago. It was abandoned abruptly due to some unforeseen reasons. It has been another decade since work ceased on the near completion of the bridge, when the organisations resumed the demand for its completion.
Earlier, the organisations held two other protests on the issue, the most recent one being the public rally cum procession from Rongrenggre Government Secondary School Playground in Williamnagar. The town is likely to witness much more protests in the near future depending on the government’s response to their demands.
