TURA: East Garo Hills police have unearthed another cache of arms and ammunition belonging to the banned GNLA and its slain leader Sohan D Shira on Wednesday morning.
The weapons seized included an AK rifle and seven pistols, over two thousand ammunition, mortar shells and hand grenades.
“Based on information from villagers we conducted a search and recovered the hidden arms from two sites in the jungles of Rongbokgre and Nengmandalgre,” said East Garo Hills SP RTG Momin.
The police suspect that the weapons and ammunition, some of them of high quality, were stashed not long back by close associates of the deceased GNLA chief and they have not been damaged by the recent monsoon.
Apart from the AK rifle, which had a broken trigger assembly, and three shotgun rifles, a large number of fresh GNLA demand notes and receipt books were found in the hideout. The police said some overground workers were trying to misuse the outfit’s name for extortion.
Earlier too, huge caches of weapons were found during search operations in different hideouts of GNLA.
Wednesday’s haul includes an AK rifle, two SBBL rifles, two AK magazines, one .303 LMG magazine, two INSAS magazines, two remote controls for IED, 11 time bomb circuits, 12 RC bomb circuits, 46 WT set headphones, four tactical pistol holsters and Velcro tape rolls, among others.
