Mawkyrwat: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Thursday organised a public meeting at Umdohlun Market in South West Khasi Hills and demanded the State Government to hold a public hearing within one month regarding the Nongstoin-Wahkaji-Ranikor road so that the people of the area can decide for themselves on whether they would accept or reject the 2 lane road.
JAC secretary Sandy Myrthong said: “We demand that the government should hold two hearings, one in Kynroh (West Khasi Hills) and one in Umdohlun (South West Khasi Hills) and only the people of this area should be allowed so that we will be able to find out whether the people of the area accept or reject the road”.
Myrthong also said that according to the affidavit filed by the Ministry of Road and Transport in the Meghalaya High Court, it has clearly stated that the road was not meant for mining of uranium from Mawthabah area, but for better connectivity that would in turn uplift the economic condition of the people of the area.
“If one day they tried to force uranium mining, we will use this affidavit against the government of India as to why it earlier said that the road was not meant for uranium mining, but now it tried to mine,” Myrthong said.
He said the stand of the JAC was only to support the two-lane road from Nongstoin to Ranikor. The JAC chairman Ricky Sohlang said they tried so hard to get this road and they will not stop until the goal is achieved.
