SHILLONG: Lone opposition member and former KHADC chief executive member PN Syiem did not attend the first day of the special session of the council on Thursday.
The special session introduced crucial bills on Inner Line Permit, Khasi Lineage Bill, Bill on Town Committees to implement KHADC’s building bylaw and Bills on Traditional institutions.
It was during Syiem’s tenure as CEM that he was at loggerheads with then chief minister Mukul Sangma over the implementation of MUDA building bylaws in scheduled areas.
The chairman of the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) found himself alone when the party’s MDCs — parliamentary party leader of PDF James Ban Basaiawmoit, Banteidor Lyngdoh, Hadrian Lyngdoh, Morningstar Mawsor, Arbinus Lyngdoh — shifted allegiance to support the HS Shylla-led executive committee.
Prior to the decision of the five MDCs, three PDF members — Latiplang Kharkongor, James Sylliang and Blanding Warjri — had already extended support to the executive committee.
