SHILLONG: Union Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot announced on Thursday that the Centre would set up a sports stadium of international standard for persons with disability in Meghalaya.
The minister for social justice and empowerment said the stadium would be one of the five facilities across the country to be set up at an estimated cost of over Rs 200 crore. Meghalaya will also get a composite regional centre. Gehlot, while addressing a gathering at the Samajik Adhikarita Shivir aids and assistive devices distribution camp for differently abled persons under the Assistance to Disabled Person here, said the idea of building sports infrastructure came after Chief Minister Conrad Sangma approached him with a proposal and provided 50 acres of land for the same. The detailed project report will be prepared soon and the stadium will come up before the National Games 2022. “This will enable the state to host Olympics for the differently abled. The ministry will also set up a composite regional centre in the state and will start work once space is made available.” Gehlot said.
