Fr Chittoor laid to rest

SHILLONG: Catholic Church faithful took part in the Requiem Mass for the departed soul of Fr Varkey Chittoor concelebrated by three bishops and a large number of priests at the Cathedral Church of Mary Help of Christians at Laitumkhrah, here on Tuesday.
Archbishop of Shillong Dominic Jala, Archbishop of Guwahati John Moolachira and the Bishop of Jowai Diocese Victor Lyngdoh remembered the contribution of late Fr. Chittoor.
Delivering the homily, Bishop Victor said there were occasions in his more than sixty years as a missionary when Fr Chittoor even faced death threats “but not once did he harbour any hatred towards those who were hostile to him instead he continued ceaselessly without any fear in his missionary work which attracted many to the catholic faith”.
Archbishop Jala said the love which Fr Chittoor had for people was all embracing and transcending all barriers of caste, creed and religion. Soon after the Requiem Mass, the mortal remains of Fr Chittoor were taken to the Laitumkhrah Catholic cemetery for burial preceded by the final funeral rites and prayers.
