SHILLONG: The East Jaintia National Council (EJNC) urged the state government to pardon the crimes of former general secretary of the militant group, HNLC and retired militant, Chesterfield Thangkhiew and stated that the very act of the government would pave the way for other militants to come to the mainstream.

In a statement issued here, president of EJNC, Sambormi Lyngdoh criticised the statement of former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma not to pardon Thangkhiew asserting that the militant’s  entry to the mainstream should be welcomed.

He went on to add that during Mukul’s tenure as CM, there was no peace which was evident in the bloodshed in Garo Hills, stripping of powers of the traditional heads, the shooting down of two people in Mookhep and many others.
