MAWKYRWAT: Mawkyrwat MLA and Meghalaya Industries Development Corporation (MIDC) Chairman, Renik L. Tongkhar, while visiting the proposed site for construction of a slaughter house on Wednesday said the site has been selected 5 km away from the town in order to save the environment and to prevent health hazards.
The committee has selected Hiland village in South West Khasi Hills district as the site for the abattoir to save the water bodies from being polluted and also since animals were not being slaughtered in a hygienic and scientific manner.
“Every town and city in the country needs to have proper slaughter house which is scientific in nature. We understand that if we don’t have this kind of house, there will be a time when we may face ban because of the pollution that may affect the environment and especially our health,” Tongkhar said.
The legislator further added that the state is already suffering from the ban on coal mining which has affected the citizens.
“We mined freely but when the authorities banned we suffered because of our own doings. Therefore, it is very important to have proper slaughter house and to maintain cleanliness and hygiene to avoid this kind of ban,” Tongkhar said. He also lauded the leaders of Sankur Clan (owner of the site) who had offered to shift the temporary dumping ground which is near the site of the slaughter house.
