SHILLONG: The UDP has exposed the double standards of former chief minister Mukul Sangma who had welcomed the surrender of former HNLC chairman Julius Dorphang when the Congress was in power while rejecting the surrender of HNLC general secretary Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew now.
Vice president of UDP Allantry Dkhar slammed the former chief minister for his criticism against the MDA government on the surrender issue and reminded him of the former HNLC leader Dorphang’s surrender in 2007.
He was reacting to Mukul’s statement that the state government did not follow the “procedure” with regard to Thangkhiew joining the mainstream.
“When Julius Dorphang surrendered, why he did not point out that? What we do is projected as wrong. What they did is seen as right. What we did was for harmony and progress,” Dkhar said.
Welcoming Thangkhiew’s decision to come to the mainstream, Dkhar said, “It is another step towards building the bridge with our own people.”
“As a party, we stand by whatever the law prescribes. Anything that the government attempts to do that would bring peace and progress in the state, we welcome it but our only word of caution was it should be within the ambit and purview of the law,” he added.
