SHILLONG: The Congress is optimistic of winning both Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats even as the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) is divided over fielding common candidates.
Congress spokesperson Zenith Sangma said the differences in the coalition were foreseen. He added that people across the country have lost faith in the BJP and its allies.
“Next year, majority of the people will be with Congress because it is the alternative,” he said. When asked about the Congress’s candidates for the two parliamentary seats, Sangma said he “cannot divulge the names”.
The UDP has approved the name of former MLA Jemino Mawthoh as the party candidate while the People’s Democratic Front (PDF), an MDA ally, with four MLAs has also decided to propose a name for common candidate.
Another ally, the BJP, with two members is also exploring the opportunity of fielding its own candidates from both the constituencies and the party leadership in Meghalaya has been asked to assess the ground reality about its prospects.
