SHILLONG: The All Meghalaya Other Backward Classes Organisation petitioned the Commissioner and Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, T. Dkhar, on the deprivation of the rights of OBCs in the state.
The chairman of the organisation, RG Pradhan, informed that the issuance of OBC certificate has been discontinued since 2004.
However, Pradhan in a letter to the Social Welfare Department Commissioner stated that the government in its letter dated October 28, 2013, addressed to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, had conveyed that no specific community has been recognised as belonging to OBC in Meghalaya and there is no notified state list of OBCs.
In this connection, he questioned the issuance of OBC certificates till 2004 when there was no specific community recognised as OBC. Pradhan asserted that constitutional rights and privileges of reservation have been denied to eligible citizens, which is “discriminatory”. He urged Dkhar to look into the matter and take remedial steps.
