‘Lack of evidence in corruption cases hinders police probe’

SHILLONG: Spill Thamar, SP Ri-Bhoi, Nongpoh has stated that the police department faces many difficulties due to lack of proper evidence in most corruption cases. He was speaking as the chief guest at the Vigilance Awareness Week held at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam on Saturday.
Thamar spoke on inculcation of ethics and moral upbringing of the younger generation which can help eradicate corruption by 2022.
He also felicitated the winner of different competition and distributed the prizes and certificates.
With the theme “Eradicate Corruption- Build a new India”, the week-long event started from October 29 to November 3.
The programme was inaugurated on October 29 by Kala Rama Chandra, IPS & Director, North Eastern Police Academy, Umiam, Meghalaya as the chief guest. The oath taking ceremony was administered by Dr S.K Das, Principal Scientist & Vigilance Officer of the institute.
Speaking at the inaugural function, the chief guest emphasized on the roles and responsibility of citizens in keeping a strict vigil for good governance.
She said it is the ethical duty of every citizen to inculcate such behaviour in their day to day activities.
The awareness programme was scheduled with various competition such as poster making, slogan writing, essay competition, extempore and quiz.
The valedictory function of the week-long event was celebrated on Saturday at Dr. D. N. Borthakur Conference hall of the institute. The occasion was attended by all the staffs of the institute.
Meanwhile, IIM Shillong hosted a talk on the topic “Corruption – A Growing Concern: Dimensions & Way forward” in view of the ongoing Vigilance Awareness Week.
RS Bhatti IPS, currently the CVO, AAI accompanied by DK Kamra, Regional Executive Director, North East Region, AAI delivered a lecture highlighting the different dimensions of corruption, black money and money laundering and why it was important to understand the laws and regulations associated with them.
He emphasized the fact that there are ways for citizens of the country to lodge complaints without having to disclose their identity in order to voice their opinion against such occurrences.
Participatory notes and foreign investments were discussed which were essentially topics covered as a part of management education.
