SHILLONG: There is a possibility of the Election Commission holding the by-poll for Selsella along with the Lok Sabha election sometime in April next year.
The new House will have to be constituted in June.
An election official said on Monday that November may not be convenient for holding the by-poll due to the examinations and there will be many festivals and holidays in December-January.
The official added that there will be six months’ time to complete the process of by-election from October 8, the day the sitting legislator Clement Marak passed away.
The political parties are yet to discuss the issue of fielding candidates for the Selsella by-poll.
Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor said the Election Department is ready to hold the by-poll anytime though there is time till April.
He also said the department is targeting 19 lakh voters by 2019 before the nation goes to the polls.
There are at least 77,000 new voters, including those who will be completing 18 years, who are left to be enrolled by January next year.
“We hope to enroll at least half of the 77,000 voters before the Lok Sabha polls,” he said.
