Former GNLA chief Champion forms Garo body

SHILLONG: Former GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma has formed the Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) with its headquarters in Tura to take up the cause of the Garo people.
In a statement on Tuesday, Sangma said the organisation was created by the people and is meant for the welfare of the Achik (Garo) people.
AHAM is a non-political and non-profit organisation but will stand with firm dedication, determination and commitment against political, social and economic injustices to the Garos, he said.
“AHAM has members drawn from all walks of life and they joined hands together for the genuine cause of the Achik people within Meghalaya and even outside within Indian territory”, he said, adding that issues concerning the people will be tackled through democratic principles.
“People wanted me to lead the organisation and offered me the post of president and this is a huge burden. I accepted this great challenge and I am ready to shoulder the responsibilities. The Supreme Court has set me free, I do respect this and at the same time, I will sacrifice my life and time for the Achik people”, he asserted
According to Sangma, his organisation will act as the apex body for all Garos.
