SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said on Wednesday police can only request tourists to be careful during their visit to lesser known sites.
Marak’s statement comes days after two youths, one of whom was from Kolkata, drowned in a river at Janailar in Mawkma under Sohra police station. The senior police officer said the department has no immediate plan to issue advisory to people visiting remote sites but it may come up with directives in future.
Many of the unconventional tourist sites in the state have seen instances of drowning and the recent case in Sohra was not the first of its kind.
Following the recent incident, the state government has directed deputy commissioners and sub-divisional officers to audit tourist sites.
In the last few years, many tourists and even locals drowned in tourist sites which are secluded and unmanned.
Even the Umiam river, which is one of the most prominent tourist spots, has seen many cases of drowning in last few years.
