Assam couple killed in accident in Ri Bhoi

NONGPOH/ SHILLONG: A bike rider and a lady pillion rider were killed when the bike hit a road divider at Sumer in Ri Bhoi on Sunday evening.
Police sources informed that it was informed that the bike (AS01 D 3350) was driven by Prabhakar Medhi accompanied by a girl named Shubrata Phukon, both hailing from Assam.
They were returning to Guwahati from Shillong.
Police sources added that the fatal accident was due to over-speeding by the bike rider, who lost control of the bike and accidentally rammed into the divider of the four-lane road.
The bodies were later shifted to Nongpoh Civil Hospital by the 108 ambulance for post-mortem and the police are investigating to ascertain the actual cause of the accident.
Earlier in the day, as many as 35 church goers were injured when a bus in which they were travelling, skidded and overturned near Pommura dispensary.
There were altogether 60 persons in the bus.
A spokesperson of 108 ambulance which ferried the inured to hospitals, said the people were travelling in the bus to reach Shillong to attend the annual Eucharistic procession in Laitumkhrah.
The SPTS bus (ML01 6848) lost control resulting in the accident.
The injured persons were treated in Mawryngkneng PHC and four 108 ambulances were dispatched to attend to duty.
Some victims were later shifted to Civil Hospital Shillong.
