Garo NGO demands action against attackers of activists

SHILLONG: The A.chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF) has petitioned the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to take action against those involved in the brutal and cowardice attack on social activist Agnes Kharsiing and her co-worker Amita Sangma on November 8.
The NGO also demanded an independent probe from central agencies into the incident
“They were assaulted by 30-40 people, only two were arrested so far and other culprits are still at large. Despite repeated demands from several organisations for immediate arrest of the people involved in the attack of Agnes and Amita, nothing was done”, the AIJIF said.
According to Amita, a woman in a white Maruti Gypsy followed them and blocked their vehicle.
The NGO wanted to know what happened to the woman who blocked road and why she was not arrested? The NGO added that the service being rendered by the social activists should be acknowledged by the authorities.
“It is the responsibility on the part of the district administration and the police department to ensure safety and security of social activists.
The NGO asked the government to expedite the investigation process and prosecute the perpetrators of the crime.
Meanwhile, the Young Women’s Christian Association, Shillong condemned the brutal attack on RTI activist Agnes Kharshiing and her associate Amita Sangma. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the association wished Kharshiing and Sangma a speedy recovery and hoped that the culprits will be arrested soon and stern action will be taken against them.
