SHILLONG: The East Jaintia Hills district administration has detected 22 coal-laden trucks parked along NH-6.
Additional Deputy Commissioner S Syiemlieh lodged a complaint that on November 12, while he was travelling to Malidor, he found 22 stranded trucks on the highway without drivers and handymen.
Eighteen of the 22 trucks had Assam registration and two had Meghalaya registration. One truck had Nagaland registration number and the other was from West Bengal.
When contacted, district SP Sylvester Nongtnger said it was difficult to identify the owners since there were no drivers. “But police will find out whether these registration numbers are genuine or fake,” he added.
A case has been registered and the police are investigating to find the owners.
The detection of the trucks comes after the assault of two activists, Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma, last week. Sources said fearing checking by police and the magistrate, the drivers had abandoned the vehicles. The sources added that another reason may be to escape scrutiny by the NGT-appointed judicial committee that visited the district on Monday.
