Capacity building programme on legal rights of women held

TURA: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women in association with the department of Justice conducted a two-day capacity building programme on Constitutional and Legal rights of Women for Self Help Group members of four blocks under South Garo Hills District here at Bakdil Training Hall Baghmara.

South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, H B Marak in his remark said that the programme is basically meant to combat crime and violence against Women and that it was hightime women folks from all walks of life stood up for their rights. As a progressive society, eradicating women related crimes and violence was the duty of all members of the society, stated Marak.

While expressing his happiness towards the members of the Self Help Group,  he said that forming SHGs and being it’s members was really a good thing which will go a long way in uplifting themselves and the society as well both economically and socially.  “If you are economically sound than you will be socially strong,” he added.

Chairperson Meghalaya State Commission for Women, Theilin Phanbuh said that “Women Organisation is basically meant to protect and safeguards the welfare of the women in particular and the basic aim for organising such programme is to educate the women in the rural areas about their rights and the measures to rectify the crime against women who have been the victims of numerous trafficking, rapes, domestic violence etc.”

Other speakers also spoke on different topic like Protection of women from Domestic Violence Act, Understanding the Gender and power relations, criminal law and women related issues like sexual assault, rape, cyber crimes etc..
