SHILLONG: Asok Das Gupta, a member of the Research Centre for Eastern and North Eastern Regional Studies-Kolkata (CENERS-K), has lamented that only one percent of the total installed capacity of power in the region is available now.
Talking to media persons ahead of a programme on power scenario in the northeastern region, present situation and action plan for better future which is scheduled to be held on Friday at NEC, Das Gupta said the total installed capacity of power generation in the region is 3.5 lakh megawatts but till now only 1 percent is available.
Meghalaya has acute power shortage and numerous villages go without electricity for months.
Stating that the industrial requirement for power in the region has not taken shape like in other states, Das Gupta called for an action plan.
“The region will have to harness its resources,” he said and added that the region is an ideal place for de-centralised power.
“When the Government talks about electrification of villages in the country, they usually electrify two three houses in the village,” he added.
The one-day meeting will be attended by Power Minister James Sangma and experts in the sector and the conference will focus on how to improve the power scenario in the region.
