TURA: The Congress party in North Garo Hills district has reshuffled its officer bearers in three important party units, namely the District Congress committee, the Youth Congress and the Mahila Congress in the district following a general meeting held three days ago at Resubelpara town.

The meeting comes eight months after it faced a humiliating defeat at the hands of its rival National People’s Party which swept the February elections in the district snatching away three out of the four assembly seats.

Congress heavyweights including former chief minister Salseng C Marak in Resubelpara and Cherak Momin in Kharkutta were defeated along with sitting Bajengdoba legislator Brigady Marak at the hands of the NPP. It was only in Mendipathar constituency that the Congress was able to hold on with its candidate and sitting legislator Marthon Sangma retaining the seat.

With Lok Sabha elections looming just months away and the all important Tura Lok Sabha seat vacant, following the resignation of Conrad K Sangma who took over as the state chief minister, the Congress is leaving no stones unturned to strengthen the party and boost the morale of its cadres.

The general meeting of the District Congress Committee (DCC) of North Garo Hills took place on Tuesday in which state party leaders, MPCC vice president Polycarp K Marak, MPCC general secretaries Noverfield Marak (ex-MLA), Mukul Das (ex-MLA) and Donbosh N Sangma attended.

The meeting elected ex-MLA Cherak Momin as DCC president, Bestine Marak and Devanand Sangma as vice presidents, Sengjrang Sangma and Manseng Momin as general secretaries, Harding Marak, Dencield Marak, Willnesh Marak and Winsang Sangma as secretaries, Mrs Ritha Momin as Accountant, Mrs Denitha Arengh as Treasurer, former MLA and ex-chief minister Salseng C Marak, Mendipathar MLA Marthon J Sangma and ex-MLA Brigady Marak as advisers of the DCC.

Likewise, the District Mahila Congress elected Mrs Denitha Arengh as president, Mrs Senthilla Marak as vice president, Mrs Merina Momin as general secretary, Mrs Tengsil W Momin as assistant general secretary along with Selina Momin, Troneti Marak, Medina Marak, Lilyana Marak and Krenilla Sangma as executive members.

The youth wing of the party, District Youth Congress, also elected its own office bearers with Barthiar M Momin as president, Sofic K Marak as vice president, Rakman R Sangma, Suthin Marak, Sengthone Sangma, Cizarl D Shira, Sengbath Ch Marak, Nicholas sangma, Siljohn Sangma and Altam Momin as general secretaries of the DYC.
