SHILLONG: The long cherished dream of a lesser known locality of Shillong, Nongrah to have household water connection for its residents will be materialised soon.
The Water Central Scheme known as Nongrah Water Supply Scheme (Phase-1) of Rs.5,92,73,000 was approved by PHE on March 31 last year. The scheme comprises construction of Raw Water Sump at Dong Ktieh locality, a deep tube well and water treatment plant.
The untreated water will be pumped from Dong Ktieh to the Water Treatment Plant located in the upper portion of Nongrah.
Nongthymmai legislator, Charles Pyngrope, along with the headman of Nongrah and locality leaders on Thursday inspected the progress of the scheme.
During their inspection, they were informed by PHE engineers that the completion of Raw Water Sump at Dong Ktieh locality will take some more time, as the work could be carried out only for one and two hours in a day.
It was informed that drilling cannot take place during the day, as it would affect the academic atmosphere of Martin Luther University.
The local MLA said that he would take up the matter with the university authorities if this problem could be sorted out amicably.
Taking to media persons, Pyngrope said the residents of Nongrah are in desperate need of more water. He also expressed concern that Nongrah and Lapalang areas which fall under Nongthymmai Constituency have been excluded from the Greater Water Supply Scheme (Phase-III), while the other localities under his constituency have been covered under the GWSS.
The land and water sourcesto facilitate the scheme were generously donated by land owners of Nongrah to ease the problem of drinking water in the area.
Over 7.54 lakh litres of clean water to be generated per day will be distributed to the different localities of Nongrah.
