SHILLONG: With the MDA partners projecting their own candidates for the Shillong parliamentary seat, the NPP said there will be a common candidate from the coalition for the Shillong seat.
“We will have a common candidate and a final decision will be taken shortly in the MDA forum,” NPP state president WR Kharlukhi said on Sunday.
Indications are that the NPP may not put up any candidate for the Shillong seat as it expects the coalition partners to support Agatha Sangma, its candidate in Tura.
However, Kharlukhi said the matter will be discussed in the party.
The MDA is expected to meet this month to finalise the common candidate.
However, since Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and other NPP legislators will be campaigning for the party’s candidates in Mizoram for the November 28 polls, the MDA meeting may be delayed.
During the last meeting of the MDA, partners were asked to come up with their own nominees.
UDP has already projected Jemino Mawthoh as the common candidate while HSPDP’s choice is its Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar. PDF will also propose its nominee.
Due to the delay in getting any positive response from the NPP for Shillong seat, the UDP had indicated that the party may put up a candidate in Tura too.
The BJP is also keen to put up candidates for both Shillong and Tura.
Panels for Council polls
The NPP has formed election committees for both KHADC and JHADC polls.
The NPP president said the party will put up candidates in all the seats in KHADC and JHADC.
Kharlukhi said the committees will meet soon to discuss about candidates.
He said there are many applicants for both KHADC and JHADC.
