Ex-UDP man may join NPP
SHILLONG: The supporters of Anthony Nongbri, the 2019 Council poll aspirant advised him to contest the polls from NPP. Nongbri and his supporters quit the UDP after he was denied ticket from the Malki-Laitumkhrah Constituency seat. The decision was made at a meeting held at Indoor Stadium, Khliehshnong at Malki recently. Nongbri said he will respect the decision of the supporters.
36 held in liquor raid
TURA: 36 persons have been arrested under section 53 (1) (a) of the ME Act during raids conducted by the Excise Department of West Garo Hills in the months of September and October this year.The raids conducted in the entire district led to the detection of 39 cases including 1 unclaimed case as well as seizure amounting to approximately 34.74 litres of IMFL, 101.4 litres of Beer and 8.75 litres of ID Liquor. A total of 104 cases were disposed off and fine amounting to Rs 83,300 realised.
Two-day workshop for math teachers held
SHILLONG: The Department of Mathematics, St. Mary’s College Shillong, organised a two-day workshop under the theme ‘Effective Teaching of Mathematics’ for Secondary School Teachers teaching in the rural areas on November 16 and 17. Chief guest of the inaugural programme, Cyril V. D. Diengdoh, Joint Secretary, Finance & Planning Department expressed his concern over the present scenario of the pass percentage of students in Mathematics in the different districts of the state and said that such workshops will go a long way in helping this issue. The workshop was attended by 150 teachers which included 48 teachers from Garo Hills alone. The resource persons were Dr. A. K. Wazalwar, Head, Dept. Of Education Kits, NCERT, New Delhi and Dr. K. A. Sadat, Principal, District Institute of Education and Training, u/Dinajpur, West Bengal. A panel discussion on the topic ‘Foundation in School Mathematics: The need of the Hour’ was also conducted as part of the workshop. Mark Marbaniang, Joint Director, MBOSE, Shillong was the chief guest for the valedictory function. There was active participation from the end of the participants. The programme was sponsored by the Government of Meghalaya under VAF (CM’s fund) through the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District.
NEIGRIHMS observes Vigilance Awareness Week
SHILLONG: NEIGRIHMS observed the Vigilance Awareness Week from November 10 to 16 under the theme ‘Eradicate Corruption – Build a New India’. Integrity Pledge taking was organised for many days consecutively to ensure that maximum people participate in the pledge taking. On the first day, Integrity Pledge was taken by the Director, Prof. D. M. Thappa, the Deputy Director (A) Mr. David T. Umdor and the staff of Administrative Block. On the second day, there was pledge taking by Director Thappa, faculty and nursing staff of the hospital. On the subsequent days, pledge taking and awareness programmes were organised by the vigilance officer, NEIGRIHMS, Prof. (Dr.) P. Bhattacharyya for MBBS students, nursing students and nursing faculty. Essay writing, skit play and poster display competition was organised during the week long programme. Certificates and prizes were distributed by the Director, the vigilance officer and the Deputy Director of NEIGRIHMS.
Cement company holds programme on safety, health
Jowai: A regional level programme was organised at the Goldstone Cements Limited (Black Tiger) campus in Khliehriat by the Inspectorate of Boilers & Factories on the subject ‘Awareness on Occupational Safety & Health at Work Place’ recently. B Chyne, Dy Chief Inspector of Boilers & Factories and P L Nongbet, Inspector of Factories & Boilers addressed the gathering of around 100 employees of Goldstone Cements and TOPCEM. Addressing the gathering, plant head of Goldstone Cements, Satyendra Katiyar and head of quality control, Sudesh Sharma focused on the importance of health and safety in everyday life.
Devkota Jayanti observed
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Nepali Sahitya Sammelan celebrated the 110th birth anniversary of Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota, one of the greatest poets of Nepali Literature, at Upper Mawprem Cultural Centre on Sunday. The function was presided over by its Chairperson, Bharati Chettri in the presence of chief guest C.M Adhikari, social leader and president of Bhartiya Gorkha Parisangh, Meghalaya Chapter. The programme started with lighting of lamp and flowering tribute to Devkota, cultural dance performance and others.
