TURA: In view of the complaints received from few organisations with regard to hawkers creating inconvenience by occupying the pavements of Tura Market area, a meeting to discuss the issue as well as others relating to traffic was convened by the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh on Tuesday.
District Superintendent of Police, M G R Kumar, TMB Chief Executive Officer, S B Marak, District Urban Planner, P N Sangma, District Transport Officer and other officials were present at the meeting.
During the discussion, the DC said that specific places have been allotted for the vendors despite which, they come near the road and sell their goods since people also have the tendency to buy things from the roadside. Therefore, Singh directed the concerned authority to issue notices to these vendors to stop vending especially in busy market areas in and around the town.
On the the traffic jam during peak hours at Chandmary, Ringrey and Hawakhana areas which according to the Officer Incharge of Tura Traffic Police is due to the presence of prominent schools in the area, as well as the dropping of children to their respective schools, the Deputy Commissioner decided to call for a meeting with all the heads of schools for discussion.
With regard to the points raised by some members attending the meeting for reckless driving and overtaking of auto-rickshaw drivers, he said that these actions need to be controlled and have also directed the District Transport Officer to check and also to maintain colour coding of auto rickshaws to differentiate the zones or region since many from outside the region are found to be plying in the town adding to traffic snarls in the area. Further, for those driving without proper documents, he had directed the officials to check and penalize them for non compliance to the rules and regulations laid down by the motor vehicle act. Further, in view of the increasing number of garages/ workshop coming up in and around the busy areas of the town, the Deputy Commissioner instructed the concerned authorities to issue license only to those who have enough space and added that these kind of workshop should be opened in the outskirts of the town where there is ample space for repairing and parking, etc.
Moreover, in a bid to ease traffic congestion, he instructed the concerned authorities to issue notice to the respective owners to remove all old vehicles lying on the roadside.
