Student hit on NH-6 dies; call for better traffic rules

NONGPOH: The school student who was hit by a speeding vehicle on the highway in Nongpoh on Tuesday succumbed to injuries at NEIGRIHMS later at night.
Rani Rongpeit was a Class XI student of Alpha English Higher Secondary School.
Kyrmenlang Uriah, president of the Alpha Alumni Association, in a press communiqué issued on Wednesday, termed the accident as “very unfortunate” and sent his condolences to the bereaved family.
Concerned over the growing cases of accidents, Kyrmen met Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah on Wednesday evening seeking her intervention in implementing strict traffic rules.
In a letter handed over to Kurbah, Uriah said, “It is with a huge degree of emotion with which I write this letter after a Class XI student of Alpha English Higher Secondary School on her to way school and trying to cross the road for appearing examination was hit by a speeding sumo on NH-6, Ri Bhoi District, on Tuesday and declared death at around 11 PM by doctors of NEIGRIHMS, Shillong.”
The statement also called for tackling of the rising number of accidents by a multi-disciplinary approach.  “As the president of the Alpha Alumni Association and a youth leader of the district, I would like to approach and request you to ask the traffic department and the Transport Department to implement the rules and regulations available to prevent road accidents,” Uriah said in the letter and also pitched for traffic awareness.
