SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will ask the state government to move the Centre to make necessary corrections to include only the indigenous tribes of Meghalaya in the Scheduled Tribe list in the state.
In this regard, the KHADC wants an amendment to the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) order, 1950 and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes orders (Amendment) Act, 1976.
The KHADC passed an official resolution in this regard moved by KHNAM MDC Adelbert Nongrum.
KHADC CEM HS Shylla said, “He (Nongrum) moved the resolution to include only the indigenous tribes in the Scheduled Tribe list in Meghalaya.”
He cited examples and said, “Nagas are listed as Scheduled Tribe here in Meghalaya which means that the Nagas are Scheduled Tribe here in the state whereas we are not Scheduled Tribe in Nagaland.”
Shylla said that there are many sub-tribes of Kukis as well.
On the other hand, he said there should be correction to Khasi, Jaintia, Pnar, Synteng, as it should be only Khasi and Pnar.
