SHILLONG: In an effort to spread awareness to the general public about diabetes as a disease that can potentially cause blindness, Bansara Eye Care Centre organised and conducted a Global Diabetes Walk at Mawsynram on Thursday. The staff and students participated in the walk which was later joined by the locals.
November 14 is recognised as World Diabetes Day and each year, the International Diabetes Federation marks the day with a global campaign promoting diabetes awareness and advocacy.
Speaking at the programme, Dr. Jennifer Basaiawmoit, Medical Director – Bansara Eye Care Centre said, “Today many diseases have made their way in the life of our people, especially in urban areas where balanced diet and regular exercise are often neglected. Diabetes as a disease can be found in many people without them knowing it.”
The walk which began at the commercial hub of Mawsynram culminated at Mawsynram’s Indoor stadium where MLA H. M. Shangpliang attended the occasion as chief guest.
A free eye screening camp was also organised by Bansara Eye Care Centre with support from the MLA.
Chief guest Shangpliang said “Eating healthy is essential to maintain a strong body and equally important is exercise which can be in the form of a walk. Green vegetables should be part of our diet to ensure that our body gets all the essential nutrients to protect it from diseases.”
459 patients registered themselves during the eye screening camp and many benefited wherein medicines and spectacles were distributed.
