SHILLONG: With an aim to increase awareness and encourage students about the preservation of the cultural heritages, monuments and stately homes of the state, the Department of Tourism and Travel Management, Martin Luther Christian University, commemorated the World Heritage Week by organising a Heritage Walk in Sohra on Thursday.
The walk started with a visit to the Nongsawlia Presbyterian Church, one of the oldest Presbyterian churches in the North East (1846) by the Welsh missionaries.
However, the church building was destroyed by the great earthquake of June 1897, and a new church building was built in 1898. The students also visited the Thomas Jones School of Mission, which was established in Nongsawlia in 1886 in memory of Rev Thomas Jones, known also as the father of the Khasi alphabet, who came to the Khasi Hills in 1841.
They also visited the present Sohra Police station which was built on the same grounds which held the police lockup during British Rule.
