Cabinet’s nod to independent probe into attack on Agnes Kharshiing, Amita Sangma

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Cabinet has finally ordered an independent fact finding inquiry to ascertain the circumstances which led to the current situation in the state  following the deadly attack on CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing and her colleague, Amita Sangma

Speaking to media persons after the Cabinet meeting, Home Minister, James Sangma said that the modalities of the independent inquiry would be worked out by the political department in consultation with the Law department

He, however, refused to comment as to who will head the inquiry though he said that the as per the convention, retired judges of the High Court conducts such inquiry

Stating that the Government wants to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the matter, he added that  the independent inquiry would get to the genesis of the   issue right from the year  2014  when the NGT first imposed a blanket ban on coal mining.

He also expressed concern over the recent attack on CSWO leaders,

When asked about the NPP leader from East Jaintia Hills who is suspected to be the main accused behind the attack on CSWO leaders, he said that the party affiliation of the accused did not matter and if he was guilty, law would take its own course.
