SHILLONG: Meghalaya Government has turned down the demand of the Opposition for a CBI inquiry into the ghastly attack on CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing and her colleague, Amita Sangma in Sohshrieh village in East Jaintia Hills earlier this month
Replying to a short discussion during the one-day special session of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly here on Tuesday, Home Minister, James Sangma said, “I don’t see the need of a CBI inquiry as the government has already constituted an independent fact-finding inquiry into the matter.”
Earlier, Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma had demanded the State government to order a CBI inquiry into the matter as doubts were being raised over the integrity of the people posted in those areas
Earlier, while replying, Home Minister, James Sangma gave a detailed account on the background of the incident and how District Police immediately swung into action and arrested many people who are allegedly involved in the incident.
Stating that the case is also being investigated by an officer in the rank of DSP, Home Minister added that the investigation was progressing well
Maintaining that the police department is following all procedures while investigating into the case, he added the law would take its own course against anybody who was involved in the incident and party affiliation of the suspect in the case did not matter to the Government.
It may be mentioned that Nidamon Chullet, the working president of NPP of East and West Jaintia Hills District is accused of being the one who led attackers to attack Kharshiing and Sangma on that fateful day
According to Sangma, the State Government will bear all the medical expenditure of Amita Sangma and Agnes Kharshiing and NEIGRIHMS director has been asked to submit the medical bills to the Government
He also said that there was nothing shoddy and no lapses in the investigation being carried out by the police even as he added that CCTV cameras had been installed in NEIGRIHMS where both victims are undergoing treatment and 24/7 police protection has been given to both the social activists.
Initiating the short discussion, legislator from Mawsynram, HM Shangpliang questioned the State Government for ordering an independent inquiry into the matter after 20 days of the investigation.
He also lamented that while six people were arrested, the prime accused was still at large whereas the district police has not even issued a look out notice
Leader, of Opposition, Mukul Sangma while participating in the discussion asserted that the charge-sheeting should be vested with the independent authority and there should be no derailing of the investigation
