Govt forms green panel

SHILLONG: The government on Tuesday formed a committee on environment to examine the nature, degree and extent of damages caused by pollution.
The committee is also mandated to review implementation of various schemes, both central and state, relating to environmental and climatic change.
The Rules Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly that met on November 22 to discuss the need for a new green panel presented its report during the special session on Tuesday.
It has named Donkupar Roy as chairman. Leader of the opposition Mukul Sangma, MLA Charles Pyngrope and Brening A Sangma are the members.
The new panel will study environmental problems within the state and recommend remedial measures.
The committee will also examine the working and activities of the department, boards and industrial establishments in the state in relation to protection of environment and effect on climate change.
