SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women has asked the government to provide 24×7 police protection to Amita Sangma, who is the prime witness in the November 8 assault case.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday, chairperson of the commission Theilin Phanbuh said Amita, a widow from Tripura who lives in a rented house in Madanrting with her children, perceives threat to her life.
“Amita Sangma… has no family or relatives in Shillong to support her. She has seven children, the eldest son being 19 years only and a daily wager and others being minors… Being prime witness and under threat of elimination felt by the victim, Amita Sangma needs 24-hour police protection and the whole family needs to be shifted to a safe house,” Phanbuh said in the letter.
The chairperson added that she should be kept at NEIGRIHMS till the government finds a “safer house”.
Once again condemning the attack on Amita and CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing in East Jaintia Hills, Phanbuh suggested that the government should speed up the process of giving interim relief to the victims for medical treatment.
The commission, while asking the government to constitute an inquiry committee at the earliest as it was concerned about the slow progress in investigation, said the grievous injuries sustained by the duo should be amply compensated.
