TURA: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh on Thursday appreciated the endeavor of the State Government to double the income of farmers from the region by 2022.
Singh was speaking during the One Day Kisan Mela cum Agriculture Exhibition and sale of agricultural products held on Thursday at New Tura Playground in Tura with an aim to create awareness on modern technology equipments and appliances and also to facilitate the farmers to showcase and market their agricultural and varied other local products of the region.
The programme was organized by the Department of Agriculture in Shillong in collaboration with the District Agriculture Officer and Agriculture Mechanical Wing in West Garo Hills.
Referring to the mono-culture type of farming being practiced by the farmers in the region, Singh stressed on the need to adopt and initiate multiple and integrated cropping in the area so as to avoid leaving the land uncultivated for most part of the year.
Mentioning about the various schemes being offered by the department, he urged the concerned department to create awareness among the farmers to make use of the modern agricultural equipments for their farming activities and also urged the farmers to avail these opportunity and make right use of the agricultural tools and implements which would help them not only to increase their production, but also enhance their income generation as well in future.
Earlier in his introductory speech, Joint Director, West Garo Hills Tura, L Laloo said that the Kisan Mela has been organized keeping in mind the strategy adopted for Doubling of Farmers’ Income by 2022, which is an initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.
Stressing on the need to adopt modern technology equipments in farming, he stated that these tools and implements play a vital role in the lives of a farmer by offering easy farming methods and ensuring better productivity.
Later, the Chief Guest along with the Officers of Agriculture department visited the stalls put at the venue by the concerned department and progressive farmers from all the districts of Garo Hills region.
