SHILLONG: Social activist Agnes Kharshiing, who is undergoing treatment at NEIGRIHMS, said on Friday that there is a need for CBI probe into the November 8 assault incident.
Earlier, Agnes’s colleague Amita Sangma had also said the CBI inquiry can only unravel the politico-police-mafia nexus and not a judicial inquiry, which only submits a report to the government without any charge-sheet against the accused.
“There is a big racket and this has to be exposed. Only a CBI probe can do this,” said Agnes, who is steadily recuperating. She also doubted the efficiency of police citing various past investigations where police failed to take the probes to its logical conclusion.
Till date, the police could arrest only six persons out of the 30 involved in the murderous attack on Agnes and Amita who were clicking pictures of coal-laden trucks.
The prime accused in the attack, NPP leader Nidamon Chullet, is still absconding.
Agnes said the CBI probe will reveal the sponsors of the attackers.
The activist recollected that on that fateful day after the assault, her colleague Amita had alerted police in Shillong that helped in their timely arrival at the hospital.
After the surgery on her elbow, Agnes is recovering though the wounds on her head are yet to be healed.
She is yet to get the same flow of speech as before due to the brutal attack but there is progress in her health.
After her release from NEIGRIHMS on Friday, Amita appreciated the doctors and staff there, besides those at Ialong Civil Hospital Jowai, the medical team of I08 Ambulance service, the state government, the Ministry of Health, police, MSCW, NGOs, church elders, family and friends, and the media.
She also extended her appreciation to the governor, the chief minister, the leader of opposition, ministers, MLAs, MDCs, Ampareen Lyngdoh who is the chairperson of the Assembly Committee on Empowerment of Women and its members, Shillong Garo community and people from all walks of life who visited and prayed for the duo’s recovery.
MoS on attack
Minister of State for Women and Child Development Virendra Kumar, who was in the city on Friday, said he would take up the assault of the activists with the state government.
Kumar urged the government to provide proper security and protection to the activists.
